6/28/17 Elementary Reconfiguration Public Forum Presentation by Studio Jaed Architects

At the June 28, 2017 Elementary Reconfiguration Public Forum, Studio Jaed Architects made a "high-level" preliminary presentation to the attendees regarding possible options for the elementary reconfiguration project. The presentation lists potential opportunities and challenges for each option. The presentation also includes a very early draft of what a timeline could look like (including cost estimates), with construction not beginning until April 2020 and construction completing in September 2022. It's important to note that much of this information can change, particularly if the project is scheduled in phases.

Work of the Elementary Reconfiguration Committee between March 2017 and May 2017

Comparison of Options

After the Educational Visioning process was complete and the feedback was gathered at the March 9th Community Meeting, the members of the Elementary Reconfiguration Committee worked to identify the potential options for reconfiguration and consider a variety of different scenarios. That work has been collated and organized in the "Elementary Reconfiguration Options Comparison" document.

Narrowing Down Potential Options to Three

Once the work of the Elementary Reconfiguration Committee was collated and organized, the members of the committee narrowed down the potential options to a total of six, two in each category of "Early Learning Center", "Renovations/Additions", and "Large Elementary Complex". The results of that selection process was:

  • Option 1, "Early Learning Center", Variations D & E
  • Option 2, "Renovations/Additions", Variations B & D
  • Option 3, "Large Elementary Complex", Variations B & C

The members of the committee were then further tasked with narrowing the list of six potential options to three. The results of that process are listed below and selected Option 1, Variation D as the first choice, Option 2, Variation B as the second choice, and Option 2, Variation D as the third choice.

Next Steps

The next step in the process is for the Elementary Reconfiguration Committee to finalize these three options – which will take place on Wednesday, June 21 at 6 p.m. The committee will then present the three options to the general public at a public forum on Wednesday, June 28 at 7 pm in the Smithfield High School Cafeteria. The committee will be looking for feedback on the opportunities and challenges for each option. The reconfiguration committee will meet in August and use the feedback from the general public to finalize the three options. In September, the three options will be presented at a joint meeting of the School Committee and Town Council for their consideration.
